Spartan girls received some military training. They also ran, wrestled, and played sports. Just like the boys the girls were taught to put service to Sparta above everything. Spartan women had considerable freedom, especially running the family estates while their husbands were gone with the military. This freedom surprised men from other city-states in Greek because in Athens women were expected to remain out of sight and to quietly raise their children.
As far as education is concerned, only the boys of wealthy families recieved a formal education. School started around seven years old. When they got to be old enough, the boys went off to military school to help them prepare for defending Athens.
Tyrants in those days were leaders and people to look up to, instead of harsh or cruel rulers. For their supporters, who gave support to them, they set up programs to provide jobs and housing.
I thought that it was interesting how Caesar was a ruler abnd had control over many things and when he could have helped people who didn't need help he helped the poor by giving them jobs and he started new colonies where people without land could own property. I thought that this was a good thing for Caesar to do and it gave 'poor' people alot of opportunities.
Throughout its history Rome emphasized the values of disipline, strength, and lotalty and that a person with these qualities was said to have important virtue of gravitas is something that it thought was interesting. I also thought that it was interesting how they honored strength more than beauty because i believe that strength is more important than beauty.
I thought it was interesting that men were required to serve in the army until 60. When boys reached the age of 7, they moved into army barracks and stayed there until 30 years old. During the days, they spent their time marching, exercising, and fighting. They had very little to eat, to keep them fit. They slept on hard benches without blankets, and no matter what weather, they wore only light tunics and no shoes. All this to produce tough soldiers.
I found it very interesting that the sons of wealthy families got the formal education instead of enabling everyone in a family to work hard and succeed in life. I also found it very interesting that the girls were taught how to care for the house hold, instead of being taught to do math and science.
I found it pretty crazy how the Spartan were taught to put Sparta above everything, including love and family. The women often told the men to either "Come back with your shield or on it." -Thats some tough love.
I thought it was an essential idea to have lots of different forms of government. If this wasn't put in place we would have a hard time deciding what government to run today. The Greeks used different forms of government to fit the different needs of the peolple in the civilization.
Draco developed a legal code based on the idea that all Athenians, rich or poor, were equal under the law. Draco's code dealt very harshly with criminals, making death the punishment for practically every crime.
I thought it was interesting how the democracy was built very similar to our democracy. Like how, Draco developed that legal code based on the idea that all Athenians, rich and poor, were equal under the law which is very similar to "all men are created equal".
Racheal Duncan Hour 4 I thought that it was interesting how spartan girls received some military training. Also that men were required to serve in the army until 60.
i thought it was interesting that the greeks version of tyrants is the opposite of our current version. they were more like presidents in the fact that they searched out the support of the people and then when they came into power they rewarded their supporters.
I found it interesting that tyrants were thought to be leaders who would work for the interests of the people and they supported the people, where as today we think of a tyrant as someone who leads in a harsh manner.
I found it interesting that Sparta developed more of a "Military State" as apposed to a political state. It is also amazing that "spartans valued duty, strength, and discipline over freedom, individuality, beauty, and learning." That is so unique, and proves Sparta's individuality in the ancient world.
I thought it was interesting that all forms of individual expression were discouraged in Spartan life. Also that the Spartans valued strength, discipline, and duty over learning, freedom, buety, and things like that.
It is interesting how the Spartan men were to serve in the military until the age of 60. They left home at 7 years old to live in a barracks until the age of 30. They slept without blankets, exercised and fought without shoes. They were served only one bowl of porridge a day. This treatment produced tough soldiers.
I think it's interesting, and also a bit odd that the word 'tyrant' is used in a completely different way to describe the rulers of the city states in comparison to what we usualy expect from a 'tyrant'. In this case, they actually worked for the interest of the people.
I thought it was interesting how powerful individuals, like nobles or other wealthy citizens, could stop control or the government by appealing to the common people for support. There rulers were also known as tyrants.
Collin Gall Hour 4 I thought i was interesting that some spartan girls got military training. And with the boys of the family only having the money formalv education.
I thought it was interesting that a tyrant was like a modern-day politician. I also wonder what happened to the Spartans. They aided Athens during the Persian war, but they weren't in the story when the Athenians took over.
I thought it was interesting that Athenian girls did not attend school and instead were educated at home by their mothers and other female members of the household.
I found it interesting that... "In many city-states, repeated clashes occurred between rulers and the common people. Powerful individuals, usually nobles or other wealthy citizens, sometimes seized control of the government by appealing to the common people for support. These rulers were called tyrants. Unlike today, tyrants generally were not considered harsh and cruel. Rather, they were looked upon as leaders who would work for the interests of the ordinary people. Once in power, for example, tyrants often set up building programs to provide jobs and housing for their supporters."
I also found it fascinating that up until they turned 60, all men were expected to serve in the military. I try not to think of a bunch of older guys doing squat-thrusts, but that's kind of the first thing that comes to mind. Also something that I thought was funny, was that The 7 year-olds were "taken". That's what inspired my username.
